General Practitioners
GP’s examine general physical condition, record information, orders various tests, analyses and diagnose conditions, prescribes treatments and medications.  Services are available on a first in first served basis - except in the case of an emergency.  Hours are 9am-5pm Monday to Friday.  GP services are bulk billed by Medicare.

Medical clinic/nurse
Provide patients with immunisations, wound dressings, pathology, ECG’s, ear and eye checks, and other screenings.

Community Nurses
The community nursing team provides the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community of Western Sydney with an efficient and culturally appropriate quality home nursing service, with a Primary Health Care focus. This is delivered in partnership with other health services providers, such as Sydney West Area Health Services and the New Children’s Hospital Westmead.

  • Screening and interpretation of vital signs
  • Pathology and specimen collection
  • Medication administration and education
  • Information, resources and referrals for clients needing further support
  • Education and health promotion on health issues in the community
  • Advocacy for clients and families with health issues
  • Follow up visits after hospitalisation or acute illness
  • Follow up support for chronically ill patients

Health Education Officer – Public Health
Our Health Education Officer (HEO) Public Health provides education, awareness and prevention programs to the Aboriginal community of Western Sydney (i.e. the Deerubbin Local Aboriginal Land Council Area) which includes the exchange of ideas, knowledge and information on public health issues affecting the local Aboriginal community. This is undertaken by organising various health education activities, attending workshops, focus groups and visiting Aboriginal students within local primary and high schools. The HEO Public Health is also involved in advocacy for public health policy, development, research and training to advocate, encourage and promote knowledge relating to the various public health issues.

Hearing Health Program
The hearing health worker currently visits pre-schools, primary schools and high schools in the local area to screen for otitis media and hearing levels. Screening is also available to AMSWS clients at the centre on a monthly basis with the assistance of an audiologist from Australian Hearing Services. Clients that require screening at our service are referred by our GP’s or our hearing health worker.

A visiting Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist also visits AMSWS on a monthly basis, and sees children who are referred by our GP’s or our hearing health worker. To gain access to the ENT specialist the child must be a registered client of our AMS.

Grief & Loss Specialist (Bringing Them Home – BTH)
Counselling:
AMSWS offer professional counselling services for Aboriginal clients who have been through Institutions/Homes, adopted being a ward of the state and who are suffering from trauma of the past and present, helping them to live a healthy, normal and happy life.

Connections:
We help you to connect with our clients kin through various ways such as Link-up or our Men’s Group which is held on the last Friday of every month. Or through other organisations that deal in finding missing people National Archives etc.

Grief & Loss:
We help those who are looking for or who have lost one of their kin by connecting or referring them to the right person or organisation and also providing professional counselling services etc.

Seniors Luncheon:
AMSWS bring together our senior community elders 60+ and invite them to a luncheon at different venues, a time where they can catch up with one another, make new friends and enjoy a good day out.

Excursion Trips for Elders:
Now and again AMSWS take their seniors on trips to interesting paces such as Canberra to the War Memorial, National Archives of Australia and the National Museum, helping them to find their lost relatives.

Transport Policy
All transport for bookings are determined by the Clinic Co-ordinator.  Transport is provided to/from the Service under the following circumstances only: Elderly clientele; mothers/fathers with children.  Transport to and from specialist appointments is also, available check with Reception.

Diabetes health worker & healthy heart worker
Provides support on education and self-management of diabetes and cardio vascular disease.  Also provides screening, follow-up, foot care, exercise, healthy eating plans; provides nutrition information and support groups for diabetic clients.  When required, liaises on behalf of clients with other agencies, doctors and other specialist services.
