In the 1980’s, armed with clear evidence and following the successful establishment of the Redfern AMS in 1971, it was made clear that Aboriginal people wanted and needed health care to be provided to them in a holistic manner. A number of local Aboriginal community members formed a Steering Committee to investigate the incorporation of an association that would seek and receive Government funding for the provision of health care services for the Aboriginal community of Western Sydney (formerly Daruk Aboriginal Community Controlled Medical Service).
Following countless numbers of formal applications, board meetings and the very long task of negotiating with Federal Government bodies, Aboriginal Medical Service Western Sydney (AMS Western Sydney) was established and began providing a much needed health service to the local Aboriginal community.
AMS Western Sydney is located in the western suburbs of Sydney – where there is the highest urban Aboriginal population in Australia – and lies within the boundary of Deerubbin Local Aboriginal Land Council. This area encompasses Sydney West Area Health Service (formerly Western Sydney AHS and Wentworth AHS) and includes nine Local Government Areas.
